Last week Anna's post discussed ideas on how to find a new book to read and one of her tips jumped out at me:
"Ask someone to swap with you. Like a miniature book club. You both choose a book for the other person, swap and afterwards share your thoughts. I think this would be really cool to do internationally. Even just so that both get the books themselves. I think it would be a unique way to discover a new culture."
I read the lines and giggled to myself. "I've actually done this!" I thought to myself. At the beginning of spring me and my lovely friends (Lieutenant and Juju) decided to do a miniature version of the "traveling book project" that's been going around tumblr for a while. We each bought a book, read it and filled it with annotations and passed it onto the next person. Finally, we've all read all three books so I thought I could write a post about the experience.
How to Be a Woman by Caitlin Moran
I wasn't necessarily a fan of How to Be a Woman and I'm not sure I'll read her other novels. Goodreads describes this book as having "provocative descriptions". All three of us categorized a big portion of Moran's descriptions as the ever-dreaded 'problematic'. While there were parts that were funny, the overall opinion I was left with was not a positive one.
Everything Leads to You by Nina LaCour
This book was so cute!!! I was quite invested with the romantic plot that was prevalent in the novel but I was more invested with the sub-plot of the main character's life and I was disappointed when that aspect wasn't taken to completion.
Ready Player One by Ernest Cline
This was the novel I bought and read first. It describes the near future where virtual reality is in wide use and it's filled to the brim with amazing pop culture references! It's being made into a movie with Steven Spielberg directing, I cannot wait. While I was reading through the book, I created a playlist using all the songs mentioned in the narrative:

I'm always really careful with my books, trying not to crinkle the pages or break the spine or anything, so for me, annotating into the book, having a conversation within its pages felt almost sacrilegious to me. At the same time, it was very very fun! I was reading a book AND having a conversation about it with some of my best friends. I'd definitely suggest this idea to anyone and everyone, don't be too worried about "ruining" the book.
