Books Are Jazzy

A reader lives a thousand lives before they die. The person who never reads lives only one.

As it comes time to take down the decorations, I wanted to look back on the holiday season from a bookish point of view.

One of my favorite things to do for the holiday season is to decorate my shelves. I first had the idea last year, after I saw someone's decorated shelves on twitter. Last year, my shelves were quite lowkey as I had decorations all over my apartment. This year I moved back to my parent's house, and my shelves are the main focal point of my room so I really wanted to make them shine. I put up tinsel on three different "layers" through the length of the shelves, I put up icicle fairylights at the very top of the shelves to add some mood lighting, and I put random decorations on the shelves themselves, like elves and my Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer candy jar. I also decorated my reading chair by switching in a red throw blanket, a seasonal pillow, and a penguin stuffed animal. To top it all off, I placed my Christmas tree in front of the corner formed by my shelves. I loved how festive the whole area turned out, but at the same time I am ready to take it down and get back to my normal set up now that I've had this up for over a month.

Like every year, most of the presents I got were books. I've already read a few of the ones I received and I'm hoping to get through the rest of them as soon as possible. A couple of the books were ones I had read earlier in 2020, but didn't own copies of yet, so I'm super glad to add those to the shelves. My aunt got me the two cat themed books (Cats in Snow and Behind Every Great Woman is a Great Cat) because we adopted a new kitten in late November. My mother had planned on buying me the whole Dark Artifices trilogy, but she had accidentally ordered Queen of Air and Darkness in German!

Did you receive any books as gifts this year?

Until next time,
Laura

If you don't follow us on our instagram account, you probably missed that I went to New York City for BookCon for the first weekend of June! It was my first time attending a book convention in the U.S. but was by no means my first bookish convention ever, and I have to say... I was not at all prepared for it. If you've been following us for a while, you'll remember that me and Anna used to attend the Helsinki Book Fair, and I went to Worldcon in Helsinki. Those were my previous experiences at conventions and what I expected to find in New York as well.

Instead of being able to walk from panel to panel, or signing to signing, or even booth to booth, at BookCon I needed to line up at least an hour in advance for everything. I quickly realized that the packed schedule I had made for myself - sometimes even hoping to go to multiple signings during an hour-long time slot - had to be cut down by a lot.

I had also hoped to be able to go to ARC drops, but those were also behind long lines that my schedule just didn't accommodate for. Even when surprise drops were announced on Twitter, the books or items were gone within minutes. I did manage to grab one ARC during the convention, but I received it as a gift after buying another book from the booth. I received an advance copy of The Magicians: Alice's Story by Lilah Sturges, a graphic novel showing the events of the first Magicians book from the point-of-view of Alice. This was one of my most anticipated books of 2019 and I honestly started crying and had to walk away from the booth when I was given a copy!

Despite my lack of preparedness, I still had a super fun time at BookCon, plus now I know how to prioritize my schedule better if I go next year as well! Next time, I think I'll skip ticketed signings and try to focus more on in-booth events (and maybe try to get a ticket to BookExpo, which has less of a crowd and more ARC drops from what I've heard).

Even though it was only my first year at BookCon, I was lucky enough to score tickets to some exclusive events happening during the convention. Firstly, I won a raffle to attend "Snacks and Superheroes with Marissa Meyer". This was an event hosted by Macmillan on the show floor, but it was ticketed and the only way to get a ticket was through the raffle. Snacks and Superheroes with Marissa Meyer was held on the second day of BookCon and focused on her new-ish book series Renegades (hence the Superheroes) with the last book, Supernova, being released in November! We received a ton of swag and I was able to purchase a few of her books that I was still missing. We also got to chat with Marissa for longer than in a regular signing, and got to take pictures with her, as well as some group pictures!

The second exclusive event that I was invited to was an ice cream social hosted by Penguin Random House! This was on the first day of the convention and was hosted off the show floor but still inside the Javits Center. The ice cream social was hosted for bookstagrammers and was by invitation only. We got to meet marketing teams from Penguin Random House's various imprints and chatted about upcoming summer 2019 releases! I really liked this event since it allowed us to form connections with other people who love blogging about books, as well as some working in the publishing industry as well!

Overall, I loved having the chance to step off the show floor on both days of the convention, to calm down and collect myself in a semi-private area, as well as getting the chance to eat something. If you have the chance to attend anything similar during BookCon I highly recommend it!

This year I grabbed signing line tickets to as many authors as I could, and like I already said, I don't think I'll do that again in future years. While I did love getting my books signed, most of the signings had a purchase requirement and didn't give me as much time with the authors as I would have liked. However, I was super excited to meet the authors that I did even if I didn't get much time with them. On Saturday, I had tickets to the signings for Evangeline Lilly, the author of The Squickerwonkers novels as well as an actor known for her roles as The Wasp in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Tauriel in The Hobbit movies, and Cassandra Clare, the author of The Shadowhunters novels. On Sunday, I had signing tickets for N.K. Jemisin, the Hugo-award winning author of The Broken Earth trilogy, and Victoria Aveyard, the author of the Red Queen series.

Quite possibly the highlight of my BookCon experience was meeting V.E. Schwab in an in-booth signing line where she was signing posters promoting her upcoming novel Tunnel of Bones. She was also kind enough to sign books for anyone who had any with them, and even signed a sticker for me that I could place in one of my books at home! Schwab is one of my current favorite authors and I cannot wait for Tunnel of Bones to come out!

All in all, I really enjoyed the opportunity to go to BookCon and getting to see what it was like with my own eyes! I know have a much clearer understanding of what conventions (both bookish and not) are going to be like in the U.S. so I won't go in with too high expectations again.

Have you been to any bookish convention or to BookCon itself? What were your experiences?

Since I now live in the U.S. I can purchase Owlcrate boxes at a reasonable price. Ever since the "Wanderlust" box was released back in July of 2017, I have had my eyes on it. Thus over winter break, I finally grabbed myself by the neck and ordered the box. When I arrived back on campus, I had a fun package waiting for me.

The full contents of the Wanderlust Owlcrate box
Because this was a "past box", I already knew what was going to be in the box. The box contained so many amazing items, all of which I have put to use in some for . Of course, I was most excited to finally get my hands on The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue by Mackenzi Lee. Along with the book, the box also contained a signed bookplate, a letter from the author, and a map of the world of the book.

Be sure to keep your eyes peeled for a review of The Gentleman's Guide to Vice and Virtue!

Laura and I kickstarted the summer with a trip to our loyal neighboring capital city, Stockholm. Out of our petite itinerary, the only sight/thing to do that didn't let us down was Science Fiction Bookhandeln on Västerlånggatan. Unlike the cherry blossoms we missed or the Urban Outfitters that had taken off and moved without any warning, the bookstore greeted us like old friends. And typically for two book lovers, we didn't leave empty handed. Here's what we grabbed from the shelves:

The Story of Kullervo by J.R.R. Tolkien.

I actually purchased this as a graduation gift for my friend because the character and hence the whole story has gotten its inspiration from the Finnish epic Kalevala. I'm actually quite interested in the book myself and might have to get my hands on a copy for myself too.

The Trials of Apollo the Dark Prophecy by Rick Riordan.

My brother dropped me a hint saying he'd like this sequel for his birthday, but as the book had only just been released, I hadn't been able to find it anywhere back home. Lucky there's Sweden with it's sci-fi bookstores right next door!

Gemina The Illuminae Files 2 by Amie Kaufman and Jay Kristoff.

This was Laura's find. I think it's only fitting that since I somehow got more books than her, she would end up buying one equal in size to my two combined. Even, right?

I've been buying some books over the past month and I'm so excited to share them with you!

  1. Frost Like Night by Sara Raasch: This was the last book in the Snow Like Ashes-series and I read it as soon as it arrived in the mail! If you haven't read this series yet, I'd highly recommend it!
  2. The Odds of Lightning by Jocelyn Davies: I actually don't know too much about this but I know it's magical realism which I love so I'm interested to see what this will be like.
  3. The Princess Saves Herself in This One by Amanda Lovelace: I've been hearing about this wonderful little book of poetry ever since it came out and I loved it so much!! I'll be posting a full review once I get a chance to read through it again.
  4. The Bronze Key by Holly Black and Cassandra Clare: I am so obsessed with this series and can not wait to read the newest instalment.
  5. Unravel Me and Ignite Me by Tahereh Mafi: After going to the Furthermore event in New York, I decided to read everything Mafi has written as quickly as possible.
  6. Nimona by Noelle Stevenson: I thought it would be fun to sneak in a graphic novel as well and this should be a quick read.

Furthermore is the newest novel by bestselling author Tahereh Mafi. It's a cute middle school fantasy book. It follows the story of young Alice Alexis Queensmeadow as she explores the land of Furthermore in hopes of finding her missing father. Simultaneously it explores important themes of friendship and individuality.

It was released on August 30th, while I was traveling in New York. As soon as I heard I got myself a ticket to the launch event hosted by Books of Wonder at the New York Public Library. When the day of the event finally came, I stumbled in wild-eyed and nervous, not knowing anyone there. Within minutes I felt comfortable. Something about being surrounded by people who are like you makes it easy to strike up a conversation, and thus I spent the time before Tahereh showed up chatting with other fans.

The event was so well planned it was amazing! I got there quite early and thus got a good spot in the line to get your cop of Furthermore personalized. Unlike other similar events I've been to you were assigned a number and they only had 10 people line up at a time. Thus you didn't have to spend the entire event waiting in line and miss all the other organized activities. Beyond the autographing portion, there was an interview with Tahereh moderated by her husband and fellow author Ransom Riggs! The couple was so cute and I loved their chemistry. Beyond that, there was a lot of merch that was given out as well as an airbrush tattoo station. Finally, they were selling copies of all of Tahereh's and Ransom's books all signed, but Ransom wasn't personalizing any during the event. Overall it was a lot of fun and I'm extremely happy that I happened to be in town while it happened!

This Christmas, my parents got me a gift card for OwlCrate: the monthly YA subscription box. I used it on getting the January box. Each month the box is compiled around a theme, with all the knick-knacks being related to that theme. The theme in January was fantasy, which made me even more excited to get the box.

When I ordered the box, the website said I'd get it in mid-February so I was quite surprised to find it waiting for me at the post office when I went to pick up some packages earlier this week.

Opening the box was a surreal experience. I'd heard so many good reviews about the company, I couldn't believe it was finally happening to me.

Altogether the contents of the box were exciting. The book that came with it was Worlds of Ink and Shadow by Lena Coakley – a fantasy novel about the Brontë sisters. Its premise definitely caters to the IB-student in me. Alongside the book came a letter from the author, as well as other merch related to the novel.

Another item in the box that I want to talk about is this amazing lip balm from the etsy store GeekFireLabs. It's both a great lip balm, and it smells fantastic! Furthermore, it's Harry Potter inspired so on all levels it's become a favorite for me.

Other items included in the box were a beautiful Throne of Glass inspired print and the Raven Cycle inspired bookmark. The last item was a Harry Potter pop figurine, which is now guarding over my Harry Potter- books.

All in all, the OwlCrate box was a great experience and I hope to be able to continue with it in the future.

I feel like every other post I make is another haul...oh well. This time I was in America for two weeks, and I actually managed to read a lot of the books I bought, while I was there.

(from top to bottom) An Ember in the Ashes by Sabaa Tahir, A Court of Thorns and Roses by Sarah J. Maas, The Assassin's Blade by Sarah J. Maas, Before Tomorrowland by Jeff Jensen, Brad Bird and Jonathan Case, Orange is the New Black by Piper Kerman and Wicked/Son of a Witch by Gregory Maguire.

(from top to bottom) Legend: The Graphic Novel by Marie Lu, My Heart and Other Black Holes by Jasmine Warga, The Impossible Knife of Memory by Laurie Halse Anderson, Mr. Penumbra's 24-Hour Bookstore by Robin Sloan, Talk Like TED by Carmine Gallo and Jurassic Park/The Lost World by Michael Crichton.

Even though I haven't yet bought or read the rest of the Bloodlines (apart from the first two), when I saw a signed copy of the Ruby Circle I just couldn't resist.
(from top to bottom) The Ruby Circle by Richelle Mead, The Wrath & the Dawn by Renee Ahdieh, Playlist for the Dead by Michelle Falkoff and Saga Volume 3 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples.
I'm really happy with all of my purchases, even though this is an insane amount of books, and I can not wait to read the ones I haven't yet.

Me and two of my friends went to Stockholm during the past week for a concert, and since we're all avid bookworms we visited some bookstores while we were there.

The English Bookshop in the Old City was super cute. The owner of the store was really helpful and kept recommending books to us.

THIS STORE WAS SO AMAZING!!! It had everything that had something to do with science fiction or fantasy. Marvel comic books, manga, movies, and novels galore! Definitely worth a visit if you're ever in Stockholm.

I'm proud of myself for controlling myself at these stores, sort of...

The books I got (pictured from top to bottom) are Saga Volume 2 by Brian K. Vaughan and Fiona Staples, The Golden Lily by Richelle Mead, Let's Explore Diabetes with Owls by David Sedaris, The Miniaturist by Jessie Burton and last but not least Interview with the Vampire by Anne Rice.

I don't think I'll be getting to any of these books in the near future, but I am really excited to read them. They're all books that I've heard great things of and I hope they stand up to the hype.

At any given time there are dozens upon dozens of giveaways going around the internet. I'll often sign myself up, with a feeling of "no one even ever wins these things anyway". HOWEVER, about a month ago, I was lucky enough to win these two beautiful books!

I received No Strings and The Suicide both by Mark SaFranko.

Look how pretty the cover for The Suicide is!

What's even better? They're both signed by the author.
