Attending my first convention

At the end of June, I traveled to the Finnish islands to attend my first-ever convention, the Archipelacon. To be perfectly honest, I was mainly attracted to the convention due to its high-profile guest of honor; George R.R. Martin.

Sadly I was only able to attend for the first two days of the convention, which meant I had a jam-packed schedule while I was there. Below is a picture from an interview with Scandinavian authors Johanna Sinisalo and Karin Tidbeck. I'd recommend reading their works (both have works published in English), if you want to delve into the world of Nordic Weird.

Approximately 2 seconds into this interview Tidbeck became one of my favorite people ever...

I'd heard about the 'We Need Diverse Books' movement online, and when I saw this panel in the schedule I knew I would be attending it. Even though this wasn't an official WNDB panel, the topic is still and incredibly important one, it's fantastic seeing young authors stepping up and standing behind the ideals of the movement.

At the end, I couldn't believe I hadn't started attending conventions earlier; the atmosphere was so welcoming, and it was filled with people of all age groups who were interested in the same things as I am. I'll definitely be attending more conventions as I get more and more opportunities to do so.

This beautiful piece was being auctioned off, my fangirl heart was a-fluttering at the sight of it.
