Be Careful What You Wish For

That's what the back cover of the popular Finnish author Salla Simukka's book Jäljellä says. The main plot is built around a 15 year old girl Emmi, who runs away from home only to return to an empty world. All humans have disappeared.
The world she lives in is our world in tge future. Everyone is divided into groups according to their specialties and talents. Emmi, however, didn't fit into this society. This reminds me of another popular series, Divergent. In both books the grouping of people doesn't work as well as hoped. It has flaws. I think it is good to have books that consider a future like this as it gives us a glimpse of what could be and how it shouldn't be.
As Emmi finds herself alone she must figure out what to do next. I liked how she wonders, as do we I guess, if she is the only person in the universe and what is the meaning of her life now. A philosophical aspect based on the question of existence. Why are we here? Are we the only ones? Why?
Another, small but I think important, point is how in this time people respect the environment and care for the nature. And as for huma rights, homosexuality is no more odd than heterosexuality.

I understand that reading a book in Finnish might not be possible for everyone reading an English blog. But I found some interesting points that I wanted to share and took the chance to promote Finnish literature. A foreign culture is never not important enough to read about.
