Mythology
Flashback to 6th grade English
class. I don’t know how — if at all — it was related to the
curriculum, but our teacher started teaching us about Greek mythology. And ever
since, I’ve been hooked on mythology in general.
Now as I started my “Introduction to Finnish
literature” course, one of the first texts we were handed was the Finnish
national epic Kalevala. As of writing
this post, I’m on poem 15 (out of 50) and I’m in love. I adore the language and
learning more about the beliefs of Finns of old. I feel connected to my
forefathers more than ever before, not only through the story itself, but also
through the physical copy of the book I have. It belonged to my grandfather and
the book is full of notes he, my father, and my aunt have scribbled in the margins
while they read it.
Even though Kalevala
is no modern bestseller, I honestly believe that reading it is going to be a
positive experience for me. If you guys have the chance to learn about the
mythology about your place of origin (or have the time to read about mine…) I’d
definitely recommend it!
