Nothing to Read?!
It has appeared regularly for as long as books have existed. It has caused frustration and headaches for no apparent reason. "It" is the difficulty of deciding on a book to read. All of us passionate readers encounter this problem every now and then. It is perhaps the most common issue among readers apart from having too many books on your to-read list. So what is there to do when this unfortunate interference comes along to make your life difficult?
- Consult the ever-so-helpful Goodreads. If you don't already have an account I strongly recommend singing up. The app will keep you up to date on all the new releases, your friends readings, your own lists and so much more. You can also join groups with like-minded book worms, take quizzes or polls and of course browse books. After you've simply rated a number of books you will get recommendations tailored for you based on the books you've added. Thank you!
- Ask a friend. Or if you are looking for a new perspective, ask someone you might not know so well or who reads books different from your go-to genres.
- Take a stroll between the shelves of your local (why not a new one too?) library. Just look at books and pick one that looks interesting. For those willing to leave the choice up to chance can try making life a bit more exciting with a few spicy games. You can for example pick a letter and number before hand. Then go find this letter in the shelves and take the book that is placed the number you picked. (Ie. L16=the 16th book by an author/starting with an L)
- Not on a tight budget? Get the hot new release.
- Surely you own an unread novel that you have a bad habit of leaving that way. So give this notorious book a chance. If not now then when?
- Imagine that smell of an old book. That feeling, like you are holding an actual article of history in your hands. Yes, you know what I mean. Lovely, huh? So ask your grandparents for a book to borrow from their collection. I can feel your future read oozing with older day romanticism.
- Ask someone to swap with you. Like a miniature book club. You both choose a book for the other person, swap and afterwards share your thoughts. I think this would be really cool to do internationally. Even just so that both get the books themselves. I think it would be a unique way to discover a new culture.
- Reread that amazing book you read years ago. You'll surely find new points you hadn't even come to think of before.
If you find yourself stuck, I hope these will help you out or plainly inspire you to try something different. I might have to take up my own advice here. :D If anyone is interested in number 7 comment/email. I will gladly be your book buddy.
In the best case scenario, a short reading block can lead you to a fantastic book whose existence you were previously oblivious of. So take it as an exciting learning experience aiming at broadening your horizons.
Wishing you enjoyable moments with either a new book or your favorite read from forever ago.
